Greyhound Memorial Day in Belgium

For some years now Greyhounds Rescue Belgium have organised a Greyhound Memorial Day in July dedicated to the memory of greyhounds and galgos everywhere who have suffered when their usefulness is over.

This event has always been well attended by supporters from all over Belgium who come along with their greyhounds from Ireland and galgos from Spain. This year Martin, Geoffrey and I were invited to attend and it was lovely for us to see many of the dogs we have helped rescue. The majority of the dogs we are able to help are only seen by us in photographs sent from the refuges after rescue or by the families after adoption, so to see the dogs looking so well and happy with their new families in Belgium was wonderful for us all.

We were very lucky with the weather and supporters started to arrive around 9am at the restaurant near the beach in Antwerp for breakfast. Around 11am they all went for a lovely walk along the beach, returning for a blessing from the priest, and then, as in previous years, hundreds of tagged blue balloons were released in memory of the greyhounds.

Our thanks go to Josephine, Nadine, Marc, and Mary-Janne for inviting us to Belgium for a very special week-end which we will never forget.
