Greyhounds in Need (Anne Finch's Charity against atrocities in Spain inflicted on Greyhounds)

It is hard to believe that another year is coming to an end and it has been a particularly busy year for GIN. With the help of our contacts abroad we have moved many galgos to homes in Belgium , France , Slovenia and Switzerland , plus the usual quota to the UK .

In the UK , we continue to rehome ex-racing greyhounds and the welfare groups represented on the Greyhound Forum (of which GIN is one) made a very detailed response to DEFRA (the

government department concerned with Animal Welfare) ahead of their consultation on the draft regulations for the care and welfare of racing greyhounds. We await government response.

For many years now, as well as the rescue and rehoming work, which we appreciate is first aid, we have tried to tackle the galgo problem at source.

Our Educational booklet, mentioned in our last message, has been sent to some of our contacts in Spain and is now in full production in readiness for a wider launch in schools.

Recently we contacted some MEPs to obtain information about what can be done through the auspices of the EU to bring to an end the terrible cruelty to the galgos.

We have received much information which sadly shows that bringing about changes in

Spain

for the galgos is a very complex matter, and in fact improvements can only be achieved by action from the Spanish government.

In January 2010 - Spain will be the next holder of the rotating Presidency of the European Council and this will inevitably draw attention to the Spanish government’s record on animal rights. To this end we will be making a joint protest to the Spanish Government during their Presidency. We are in the process now of investigating the most effective form of approach. We will then be seeking the support of our European colleagues, in Spain and the rest of Europe , by designing a petition for all to sign.

We are all too well aware of the difficulty in persuading the Spanish Government even to enforce their existing laws but we hope our supporters will approve our efforts in this direction and sign the petition. Please watch for the link on our website in January. If enough people sign we hope the Spanish government will pay proper attention.

Those of us dedicated to helping the galgos of Spain must never rest until their suffering is brought to an end.

Il est difficile de croire qu’une année de plus touche à sa fin, année qui s’est avérée particulièrement chargée pour GIN. Grâce à l’aide de nos contacts à l’étranger, nous avons trouvé un foyer pour nombre de galgos (lévriers espagnols) en Belgique, en France, en Slovénie et en Suisse, outre le quota habituel au Royaume-Uni.

Au Royaume-Uni, nous continuons de retrouver un foyer pour les anciens lévriers de course, et les groupes de protection des animaux représentés au sein du Greyhound Forum (le Forum des lévriers dont GIN fait parti) ont rédigé une réponse très détaillée à DEFRA (le ministère britannique chargé du bien-être des animaux) avant leur consultation sur l’avant-projet de réglementations pour la protection et le bien-être des lévriers de course. Nous attendons la réponse du gouvernement.

Depuis de nombreuses années déjà, outre le travail de sauvetage et de relogement, qui, nous le comprenons bien, ne constitue que des premiers secours, nous avons tenté de nous attaquer à la source même du problème des galgos.

Notre livret pédagogique que nous avons mentionné dans notre dernier message a été envoyé à certains de nos contacts en Espagne et est désormais en passe d’être publié à grande échelle pour être distribué dans les écoles.

Nous avons récemment contacté certains membres du Parlement européen afin d’obtenir des informations sur ce qui peut être fait sous les auspices de l’UE pour mettre un terme à la terrible cruauté qu’endurent les galgos.

Nous avons reçu une multitude d’informations montrant bien que, malheureusement, la mise en œuvre de changements à la situation des galgos en Espagne est une question très complexe et que des améliorations ne peuvent en fait être apportées que grâce à des mesures du gouvernement espagnol.

Au mois de janvier 2010, l’Espagne assumera la présidence tournante du Conseil de l’Union européenne, ce qui attirera sans aucun doute l’attention sur les antécédents du gouvernement espagnol en matière de droits des animaux. Nous sommes désormais en train d’examiner l'approche qui sera la plus efficace. Nous chercherons ensuite à obtenir le soutien de nos collègues européens, en Espagne et dans le reste de l'Europe, en rédigeant une pétition que tous pourront signer.

Nous sommes tous très conscients de la difficulté de persuader le gouvernement espagnol ne serait-ce que de faire appliquer les lois existantes mais nous espérons que nos sympathisants approuveront nos efforts dans cette direction et signeront la pétition. Merci de chercher le lien sur notre site Internet dès janvier. Si suffisamment de personnes signent la pétition, nous espérons que le gouvernement espagnol se penchera vraiment sur la question.

Ceux d’entre nous qui se consacrent à aider les galgos espagnols ne doivent jamais s’accorder de répit jusqu’à ce que nous mettions un terme à leur souffrance.

Es ist kaum zu glauben, dass sich ein weiteres Jahr dem Ende zuneigt, ein Jahr, das für GIN besonders ereignisreich war. Mit der Unterstützung unserer Kontakte im Ausland konnten wir vielen Galgos zusätzlich zu der üblichen Quote in Großbritannien ein neues Heim in Belgien, Frankreich, Slowenien und der Schweiz verschaffen.

In Großbritannien fahren wir weiterhin damit fort, ehemaligen Renn-Greyhounds ein neues Heim zu geben, und die Tierschutzgruppen im Greyhound-Forum (zu denen auch GIN zählt) gaben bereits vor den Beratungen über den Gesetzesentwurf für Haltung und Schutz von Rennhunden eine detaillierte Stellungnahme an DEFRA (das britische Ministerium, das mit Tierschutz betraut ist) ab. Wir erwarten nun die Antwort der Regierung.

Bereits seit vielen Jahren versuchen wir, neben der Rettung und Heimgebung, die wir als Erste Hilfe betrachten, das Galgo-Problem an seiner Wurzel in Angriff zu nehmen.

Die in unserer letzten Mitteilung erwähnte aufklärende Broschüre wurde an einige unserer Kontakte in Spanien verschickt und wird nun serienmäßig für eine breitere Herausgabe in Schulen produziert.

Vor Kurzem nahmen wir Kontakt mit einigen Mitgliedern des Europäischen Parlaments auf, um zu klären, was unter der Schirmherrschaft der EU unternommen werden kann, um der schrecklichen Grausamkeit den Galgos gegenüber ein Ende zu bereiten.

Wir erhielten umfassende Informationen, die leider zeigen, dass die Bewirkung einer Änderung für die Galgos in Spanien eine komplizierte Angelegenheit ist. Tatsächlich können Verbesserungen lediglich durch eine amtliche Handlung seitens der spanischen Regierung erreicht werden.

Im Januar 2010 erhält Spanien den turnusmäßig wechselnden Vorsitz über den Europäischen Rat. Dies lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit zwangsläufig auf die Tierschutzakten der spanischen Regierung. Zu diesem Zweck werden wir gemeinsam gegen die spanische Regierung während ihres Vorsitzes Protest erheben. Wir sind zurzeit dabei, die wirksamste Methode zu recherchieren. Danach werden wir mit dem Entwurf einer Petition, die von allen unterzeichnet werden soll, um Unterstützung bei unseren europäischen Kollegen in Spanien und im übrigen Europa ansuchen.

Wir sind uns über die Schwierigkeiten, die spanische Regierung selbst nur davon zu überzeugen, ihre bestehenden Gesetze durchzusetzen, allzu bewusst. Wir hoffen jedoch, dass unsere Unterstützer unsere Mühen in dieser Richtung annehmen und die Petition unterzeichnen. Achten Sie bitte im Januar auf den Link auf unserer Website. Wir hoffen, die Aufmerksamkeit der spanischen Regierung mit genügend Unterschriften zu erlangen.

Cuesta creer que ya hemos llegado al final de otro año y ha sido un año especialmente ajetreado para GIN. Con la ayuda de nuestros contactos en el extranjero hemos trasladado muchos galgos a hogares en Bélgica, Francia, Eslovenia y Suiza además de la cuota habitual del Reino Unido.

En el Reino Unido, seguimos intentando encontrar un hogar para los galgos ex-corredores de carreras y los grupos de bien estar representados en el foro de galgos de carreras, Greyhound Forum (del que GIN forma parte) han ofrecido una repuesta muy detallada a DEFRA (el departamento gubernamental del Reino Unido concerniente con el bienestar de los animales) en adelanto a su consulta sobre las regulaciones en proyecto para el cuidado y bienestar de los galgos de carreras. Estamos a la espera de la respuesta del gobierno.

Durante muchos años ya, además del trabajo de rescate y de ofrecer un nuevo hogar, que consideramos es la ayuda primordial, hemos intentado abarcar el problema de los galgos desde su raíz.

Nuestro folleto educativo, mencionado en nuestro último mensaje, ha sido enviado a algunos de nuestros contactos en España y ya se encuentra en producción total listo para un lanzamiento más amplio en los colegios.

Recientemente nos hemos puesto en contacto con algunos Parlamentarios para obtener información sobre lo que se puede hacer a través del auspicio de la UE con el objeto de poner fin a la terrible crueldad hacia los galgos.

Hemos recibido gran cantidad de información que lamentablemente muestra que realizar cambios en España para los galgos es una materia muy compleja, y de hecho sólo se podrán conseguir mejoras con la acción del gobierno español.

En enero de 2010, España será la siguiente candidata en ostentar la presidencia rotativa del Consejo de la Unión Europea y esto inevitablemente enfocará la atención sobre los antecedentes en derechos de los animales del gobierno de España. A este fin vamos a realizar una protesta conjunta al Gobierno Español durante su Presidencia. Ya estamos investigando el camino más eficaz para la propuesta. Luego buscaremos el apoyo de nuestros compañeros, en España y en el resto de Europa, diseñando una petición para que todos la firmen.

Todos somos bien conscientes de lo difícil que resulta persuadir al gobierno español incluso para que impongan sus leyes existentes pero esperamos que nuestros partidarios aprueben nuestros esfuerzos en esta dirección y firmen la petición. Os rogamos que estéis pendientes del enlace en nuestro sitio web en enero. Si la suficiente gente firma, esperamos que el gobierno de España no preste la atención debida.

Aquellos de nosotros dedicados a ayudar a los galgos de España nunca deberán descansar hasta se le dé fin a su sufrimiento.

Het is moeilijk te geloven dat alweer bijna een jaar om is en het is een bijzonder druk jaar geweest voor GIN. Met hulp van onze contacten in het buitenland hebben we vele galgo's naar een thuis in België, Frankrijk, Slovenië en Zwitserland kunnen verhuizen, plus het gebruikelijke aantal naar het VK.

In het VK blijven we ex-racewindhonden een nieuwe thuis geven en de welzijnsgroepen (waar GIN er een van is) die vertegenwoordigd waren op het Greyhound Forum (het windhondenforum) bereidden een zeer gedetailleerd antwoord voor op DEFRA (het Engelse ministerie dat zich over Dierenwelzijn buigt) voorafgaand aan het ogenblik waarop hen om advies werd gevraagd over het ontwerp van regelgevingen in verband met de zorg voor en het welzijn van racewindhonden. We wachten op de reactie van de regering.

Het is nu al vele jaren dat we, naast het reddings- en plaatsingswerk, wat we als eerste hulp zien, proberen om het probleem van de galgo's bij de bron aan te pakken.

Ons Educatief boekje dat we in ons laatste bericht vermeldden, werd naar een aantal van onze contacten in Spanje gestuurd en is nu volop in productie en klaar om verder te worden verspreid in de scholen.

Onlangs contacteerden we een aantal Europese parlementsleden om informatie te krijgen over wat we onder de bescherming van de EU kunnen doen om een einde te maken aan de verschrikkelijke wreedheid waarmee de galgo's worden behandeld.

We ontvingen veel informatie, maar jammer genoeg blijkt daar uit dat verandering brengen in de situatie van de galgo's in Spanje een complexe materie is. In feite kan de situatie enkel veranderen als de Spaanse regering actie onderneemt.

In januari 2010 is Spanje aan de beurt om de Europese Raad voor te zitten. Dit feit zal onvermijdelijk de reputatie van de Spaanse regering in verband met dierenrechten onder de aandacht brengen. Met het oog daarop zullen we gezamenlijk protesteren tegen de Spaanse regering tijdens haar voorzitterschap. We zijn nu aan het onderzoeken wat de meest doeltreffende aanpak is. Vervolgens zullen we steun zoeken bij onze Europese collega's, in Spanje en de rest van Europa, door een petitie op te stellen die iedereen kan ondertekenen.

We zijn ons er maar al te goed van bewust hoe moeilijk het is om de Spaanse regering te overtuigen om zelfs maar op de naleving van hun bestaande wetten toe te zien, maar we hopen dat onze sympathisanten onze inspanningen in deze richting zullen goedkeuren en de petitie zullen ondertekenen. Gelieve uit te kijken naar de link op onze website in januari. Als voldoende mensen tekenen, hopen we dat de Spaanse regering er de nodige aandacht aan zal besteden.

Diegenen onder ons die zich vol overgave inzetten om de galgo's van Spanje te helpen mogen niet rusten vooraleer een einde gemaakt wordt aan het lijden van de galgo's.

Sembra incredibile ma è già trascorso un altro anno, che per GIN è stato particolarmente intenso. Con l’aiuto dei nostri contatti all’estero siamo riusciti a trovare una casa per molti galgo in Belgio, Francia, Slovenia e Svizzera e, come di consueto, anche nel Regno Unito.

Nel Regno Unito continuiamo le nostre attività volte a trovare una sistemazione per i greyhound da corsa e i gruppi di assistenza rappresentati nell’ambito del Greyhound Forum (tra i quali GIN) hanno compilato una risposta dettagliata per la DEFRA (la dipartimento governativo britannico che si occupa del Benessere degli Animali) in vista della consultazione sulla bozza delle norme relative alla cura e al benessere dei greyhound da corsa. Siamo in attesa di una risposta da parte del governo.

Da molti anni, oltre a salvare i cani e trovare loro una nuova sistemazione, che rappresenta un’operazione di primo soccorso, cerchiamo anche di affrontare il problema dei galgo all’origine.

Il nostro opuscolo educativo, menzionato nella nostra ultima comunicazione, è stato inviato ad alcuni dei nostri contatti in Spagna ed è ora in piena produzione in previsione di un lancio più diffuso nelle scuole.

Recentemente abbiamo contattato alcuni Eurodeputati per ottenere informazioni su ciò che si può fare sotto gli auspici dell’UE al fine di porre fine alla terribile crudeltà a cui sono soggetti i galgo.

Abbiamo ricevuto molte informazioni che purtroppo dimostrano quanto sia difficile produrre cambiamenti per i galgo in Spagna e come anzi eventuali miglioramenti possono essere apportati solo mediante un’azione promossa dal governo spagnolo.

Nel gennaio 2010 la Spagna sarà la prossima detentrice della Presidenza rotante del Consiglio d’Europa e ciò attirerà inevitabilmente l’attenzione sui precedenti del governo spagnolo in termini di diritti degli animali. A tale scopo intendiamo fare una protesta congiunta al governo spagnolo durante la Presidenza. Stiamo attualmente prendendo in esame diversi approcci per identificare quello più efficace. Cercheremo quindi di ottenere l’appoggio dei nostri colleghi europei, sia in Spagna che nel resto dell’Europa, organizzando una petizione da firmare.

Ci rendiamo conto quanto sia difficile persuadere il governo spagnolo ad applicare le leggi esistenti ma speriamo che i nostri sostenitori approvino i nostri sforzi in tale senso e firmino la petizione. Tenete d’occhio il nostro sito che in gennaio comprenderà un link a tale riguardo. Speriamo che raccogliendo un numero sufficiente di firme il governo spagnolo presti ascolto alle richieste.

Chi è impegnato nell’assistenza ai galgo spagnoli non può aver pace fino a quando si riuscirà a metter fine alla loro sofferenza.
